The Atari VCS (later, Atari 2600) was not the first cartridge-based videogame system, but it was the most important and iconic. The first models are known as “Heavy Sixers” because of their impressive weight and six switches on the front (later models would be lighter with either six or four switches). Obtaining a Heavy Sixer is neither expensive nor difficult–unless you want everything it came with originally. And finding one new in the box is close to impossible these days.
This July 2013 listing featured a true rarity: a new (in open box) 1977 Atari VCS “Heavy Sixer.” This is the nicest boxed Heavy Sixer I have ever seen, and at least two other people must have felt the same way. Only two bidders competed for this prize, which started with a $999 opening bid. With six seconds left in the auction, the winner stepped up with a $1,425 bid.
This auction is notable for many things, not the least it being a veritable “What’s in the Box” for a brand new Heavy Sixer. You see the original CX-10 joysticks with hex discs and the original shipping box. The original purchase receipt is included, showing that the unit was purchased in December 1977 for $144.44!
